In November, Artists’ Own lost a vital member with the passing of Suzie Coles. Suzie exhibited remarkable grace and good humor over the last 14 months of her life as she battled breast cancer.
Suzie was a professional fine arts photographer who loved to use her camera to capture moose, bears, lions and critters, and more than an occasional pear or fruit. She had a sensibility about her, an eye that saw the essence of the object she focused upon. She was also a wonderful teacher in photography and art history as a docent at the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette.
Many knew Suzie for the rich arts community which she helped cultivate and nurture. She was on the Board of Directors for the Tippecanoe Arts Federation and the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette where she served as President. She was the IAC Regional Service Director, contributed to Vision 2020, and a founding member of many organizations, including Photowomyn, the Wabash Artists Alliance, and Artists’ Own.

She grew up in Lafayette and on the Tippecanoe River, and graduated from Central Catholic High School and Purdue University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts.
All who knew Suzie were struck by her Sparkle—her sense of fun, of joy, of laughter. She was a loyal friend and colleague to those of us in the community who had the joy of knowing her.
Suzie Coles Memorial Fund
To perpetuate Suzie’s commitment to the arts and specifically photography, the family has set up a fund in her memory. An annual grant or scholarship will be awarded to an individual or organization with a focus on photography.
In 2007 Suzie did a series of photographs for an exhibition titled “Square Meal Supersized”. Suzie planned to offer each photograph as a limited edition of 25 however this plan was cut short. Suzie’s family has decided to complete the edition with all profits going to the Suzie Coles Memorial Fund.
The photographs are available at Artists’ Own as well as at the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette. For more information on the series click here.

Scott Frankenberger was one of four artists (the others are from Indianapolis and Kentucky) chosen to create a sculpture for Downtown Lafayette. The national competition was sponsored by the City of Lafayette Community Development & Redevelopment department. Scott’s proposal is for a sculpture called "cRRossings" to be made of railroad ties, with internal illumination by night, to be installed at the small commemorative plaza at the intersection of Main and 11th Streets. The artwork should be finished and installed during the Spring of 2008.

A group of local potters including 4 from Artists’ Own met to create 400 bowls for the YWCA's Clay Bowl Giving Project, benefiting the Domestic Violence Prevention Program. Scott Frankenberger and Gail Johnston threw for 3 hours while others prepared clay and moved ware boards. The others, Mary Firestone, Janet Elmore, Elaine Chase, Angie Peterson, Roberta Shonemann, Kathy Shewmaker, Diana May, Susan Lopez, and Lynne Corrigan, then took the bowls home for trimming and glazing and will deliver them to the YWCA in time for the March 27 event.
Everyone in the group is also making more bowls on their own. The group felt they needed to put in a big push to make sure the Y had the 1200+ bowls they have needed in the past.

Community Support Works Both Ways
"Ginny and I shop at Artists' Own because community support works both ways. The artists at AO support our community with art donations plus they volunteer their time. At Artists' Own it's easy to find heirloom quality items that are both beautiful and useful."
