The artists at Artists' Own, Inc. are thrilled to have their own natural ‘super powers’ celebrated in this new novel by Margot Justes. Minola Grey, a young Chicago area artist searches for the muse in Paris and finds a body instead. Using her superior powers of observation and her artistic ability, and a little help from the fine looking and prickly Interpol Inspector Peter Riley, Grey searches out the villain and re-discovers her own creative passions.   Join Artists' Own for a cup of coffee and the chance to hear the author’s readings surrounded by the results of our own local artists’ creative energies. Copies of A Hotel in Paris and an anthology of short stories, The Heat of the Moment, will be available for purchase and dedication by the author.

Member Happenings

Dan Bollock will be giving a demonstration for the Wabash Valley Woodworker's Club on Saturday March 22.  Dan will cover making curved furniture parts using three methods; steam bending, milling, and laminate bending.  More information can be attained at www.wvww.net

"No More than 4" is the new handweaving class being offered by Lilly Marsh this summer in the Textile Studios of Indianapolis Art Center.  This eight week class will run from June 3 to July 29,  6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday evenings.  Lilly will focus on new games to play with simple four harness structures including warp painting, shibori on the loom and supplemental warps and wefts.  Lilly also teaches private students here in Lafayette all year round and has rental looms for take home work. "Weaving can be a little intimidating to get started on.  A loom is often a big investment, not like knitting needles.  The chance to have a low cost rental of a loom is a good opportunity for someone to give it a whirl before any major purchase.  Knitters especially like the idea of learning to weave but often don't know how to 'get in the game.'  Contact Lilly at  lilly@lillymarsh.com

Joanne Titolo will be participating in the upcoming Nexus of the Arts in the  TAF Galleries at the Wells.
This is a collaborative show, with artists of different media inspiring one another to create new works of art.
She was inspired by a poem by Catherine Grossman entitled, "Pantoum Poem for my Sister", and created a book pendant with text about her own sister, entitled, "Sister Stories".
The opening reception will be held on Friday, March 29th, from 7-9pm
The exhibit will run until April 25,2008.

"Oh Butterbean" will chase the winter blues away and make you smile.  This is a new painting by Ladonna Vohar is available in gallery. ---In real life Ladonna's dog, Butterbean, will bring Ladonna a tissue when she sneezes, open and close the refridgerator, and say his prayers.  No wonder she wanted to paint his portrait!

Supporting Our Community
Starting in April Linda Lemar will join art teacher Lisa Ariano for an artist in residence program at Klondike Elementary School.
A group of local potters including 4 from Artists’ Own met to create 400 bowls for the YWCA's Clay Bowl Giving Project, benefiting the Domestic Violence Prevention Program.  Scott Frankenberger and Gail Johnston threw for 3 hours while others prepared clay and moved ware boards.  Mary Firestone, Janet Elmore, and other potters, took the bowls home for trimming and glazing and will deliver them to the YWCA in time for the March 27 event.

Annual Membership Adjudication

Where does Artists' Own get new members?  How does one become an AO member?
Questions often asked by our clients and other artists.

Applicants go through a two step process.  Initially, the entire membership views an applicant's digital images, resume, reference information and application.  We consider a balance of criteria:  what the artist offers in terms of craftsmanship and professionalism and what the gallery needs as a mix of media in the retail space.  Decisions of this nature are exciting and difficult.  The 2nd step is a 'Meet & Greet" event where we interview the applicant and view actual artwork for the gallery.  The membership will then have a discussion and vote.

We just completed that process for our fiscal year, 2008-09 and are pleased to announce the addition of 2 artists for the coming year; we welcome photographers, Glenn Chang and Al Knight!  Watch the newsletter for more details about their work.

Their work will be available after May 1 and featured at the May 9 Downtown Gallery Walk.
